It is time for an action-packed match of IPL 2026 where the Mumbai Indians (MI) lock horns with a rebuilt Delhi Capitals (DC) at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. Despite MI’s recent history making them heavy favourites to win this contest, a revamped DC roster and unpredictable weather could make for what turns out to be a much closer match-up than anticipated. MI Remains a Dog in the Fight with DC In recent seasons, Mumbai Indians have predominately had an upper hand over their rivals Delhi Capitals. It has been MI all the way since IPL 2022 with DC losing a head-to-head duel here too, by 5-2 (including clean sweep last year). Their dominance has been often decisive, and they will want to add further to that record. Notably, MI’s fortunes changed last season when they met DC in Delhi. MI was on a four out of five match losing streak when they beat DC in this match, going on to win six games in a row which saw them qualify for the playoffs. That win served as the springboard for their renaissance. MI have already made a positive beginning to the season by winning their first game, something they haven’t accomplished since 2012. With still more momentum on their side and a settled core, they seem very well placed to continue their red-hot run. A Fresh-Look DC Readied for the Challenge But this was not the same Delhi Capitals side MI had pummelled in earlier editions. DC’s made major changes, adding new people and reinforcing needs. Pathum Nissanka comes in as a new opener and the addition of Nitish Rana at No. 3 adds more stability and aggressiveness at the top. Experienced finisher David Miller adds stability in the middle, while reigning T20I batter of the year Tristan Stubbs brings even more firepower. On the bowling front, DC’s pace attack has been boosted by Lungi Ngidi who has been in great T20 form and also with the return of T Natarajan fully fit. Under Axar Patel’s leadership, DC seems a lot more balanced and competitive. Though they really struggled to win at home last season (losing four out of five matches), this new squad will be hungry to prove themselves. Team News and Possible XIs Delhi Capitals will be firm on their combination; the only change could come in terms of impact players. Depending on the match conditions, they can either play with Sameer Rizvi or Ashutosh Sharma. One of Rohit Sharma’s nemeses has been DC skipper Axar Patel over the years, who has not only dismissed him time and again but also contained his run flow effectively. Bumrah’s track record against the middle-order of DC seems particularly impressive, with players like Miller, Stubbs and Axar not able to have a great deal of success against him in T20 cricket. Pitch and Weather Conditions This will be taking place on a batting-friendly surface which in the past has resulted in high-scoring games. The same pitch where Sunrisers Hyderabad scored a mammoth total of 278 last season. But weather could be a game changer. Forecasts call for overcast skies with a chance of thunderstorms, leading to fears about disruptions. In case of rain delay, teams will have to adjust strategies quickly for a shortened game. What to Expect While the Mumbai franchise undoubtedly has an upper hand with their legacy and playing form at present, the much-altered outfit of Delhi offers a new dimension to the battle. Their greater balance and depth might give MI more trouble than in the past. If the conditions stay dry, we could be in for a high-scoring thriller. But with rain reported in the area, adaptability and composure under pressure may be the final factor separating one team from those two important points. MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai saw yet another curious toss decision as Punjab Kings (PBKS) captain Shreyas Iyer opted to field first against the Chennai Super Kings (CSK), which had been a somewhat successful trend for his team at this ground. PBKS won their previous three clashes at Chepauk against CSK, and the skipper backed his bowlers yet again on a surface that is likely to be high-scoring. PBKS have stuck with the same playing XI signalling that there is faith in a unit that has been delivering consistently. There is, however, also flexibility in their approach as young batter Priyansh Arya is expected to be introduced later as an impact substitute based on match situation. The bigger talking point, however, came from the CSK camp ahead of the match. The five-time champions handed the left-arm spin-bowling allrounder Prashant Veer, 20 years old, his debut at this auction their most expensive buy for a whopping INR 14.2 crore. Veer’s signing is in line with CSK’s long-standing approach of investing for the future, especially to strengthen their spin department in home conditions that have typically aided slower bowlers. He joins a solid top order along with another high-value signing Kartik Sharma as part of the playing XI, bolstering both batting and bowling. Chennai Super Kings (CSK) would love to get back as the force they used to be at home when they come against Punjab Kings (PBKS) at the MA Chidambaram Stadium, a ground which was once called their fortress. CSK coach Michael Hussey and co. will be hoping that they can turn the tide around in conditions as familiar to them at Chennai, having disappointed largely on a trip to Guwahati. A historical adjustment, however, shows that Chepauk no longer remains the citadel it once was. CSK have won only one out of their last six matches on home soil, a far cry from their past dominance. PBKS also had the context of success in their favor, as they have good stats at this stage and have already beaten CSK thrice on a trot here — they hold the keys with 5 wins out of nine contested games here. CSK’s troubles are further aggravated by their probable unavailability of some of the key players. Dewald Brevis remains on the comeback trail after a side injury so is not expected to play, creating a hole in the middle order. Even more importantly, MS Dhoni is also expected to miss the encounter, which will be one of the few instances where CSK has played at Chepauk without their iconic captain. The lack of experienced players places more pressure on captain Ruturaj Gaikwad who has been struggling for form. Much like Gaikwad’s form has been up and down recently with six single-digit scores in his last ten IPL outings. Quite a few will be the second Test, but his leading numbers at Chepauk are spectacular — he has 764 runs going into the bank at an average of greater than fifty. With a relatively inexperienced middle order around him, his role in anchoring the innings will be an important one. PBKS, on the other hand, came into the clash with momentum and a well-balanced team. Captain Shreyas Iyer is fit again after suffering a hand injury, which is a huge boost to his side. The batting order seems intimidating with aggressive openers Priyansh Arya and Prabhsimran Singh who excel in hitting during the powerplay. The propensity to clear the boundary early could put CSK’s bowlers under pressure from ball one. Even the middle order looks formidable, and Shreyas Iyer brings a mathematical touch to this batting line-up, while Shashank Singh has been one of the top hitters in death overs last season. Another key player to watch would be Marcus Stoinis who has great memories of Chepauk, being one of just a handful of players to have scored a century against CSK at this ground. PBKS have the luxury of looking like a very deep squad too, with batting that goes down to No. 8 and plenty of bowling choices in the form of all-rounders like Stoinis and Marco Jansen. This enables them tactical versatility, adapting seamlessly during matches. The clash between the two teams shines a light on interesting individual matchups, too. And since 2024, no other pair of left-arm pacers have been as effective in the powerplay as Arshdeep and Khaleel, with the former topping the charts for most wickets taken in this phase. The contest is even more enticing as both the bowlers have good records against Oshane Thomas and Carlos Brathwaite, making for a battle at the top of the order. Yuzvendra Chahal is another key player as he has done well against CSK in the past. He is a very big threat not only because he can pick up the key wickets, but also because he had gotten a hat-trick against them earlier in Chennai. His grip on select batters of the CSK lineup can be crucial. There have been considerable changes to the pitch at Chepauk in the recent past. Traditionally a friend to spinners, it has more pace and bounce now that makes it conducive to stroke play. This change could play into the hands of teams that have explosive hitting units, a characteristic shared by both CSK and PBKS. With temperatures projected to remain around 35°C, conditions will also challenge the players’ endurance. The clash carries high stakes for both teams as they head into it. CSK will be eager to get back the home advantage and their fans’ confidence. PBKS, on the other hand, will look to build on their great form at Chepauk in the tournament. It should be a spirited contest between two evenly matched teams with players in form on both sides. So it is to be seen if CSK can fortify their fortress or do PBKS have what it takes to overpower the men in yellow on their home turf.
